Research Areas
His main areas of research are teaching Spanish to Native Speakers, Chicano literature and culture, and the Mexican narrative. He coordinates the Spanish for Native Speakers' Program and is also a member of the Board of Directors of La Raza/Galería Posada in Sacramento.
Recent Publications
Author of nine volumes of poetry, including Body in Flames/Cuerpo en llamas (1990), De Aztec oscuro/Of Dark Love (1991) and Snake Poems: An Aztec Invocation (1992). He has published two textbooks for teaching Spanish at the college and high school levels: Mundo 21 and Pasaporte al Mundo 21 (D.C. Heath).
Honors and Awards
He is the recipient of numerous literary awards, including the 1993 American Book Award, the 1993 Pen Oakland Josephine Miles Award and the 1994 Chicano Literary Prize.
