Course Description: This course is an introduction to Brazilian short stories from the period of 1870-1970. In this course students will examine a number of short stories individually and will study them collectively as part of a literary genre. Attention will be paid to a number of theories on short narrative written by the writers themselves. Focus on realistic representation, the fantastic, textual ambiguity, and feminine writing. Authors include: Machado de Assis, Coelho Neto, Afonso Arinos, Monteiro Lobato, Graciliano Ramos, Mário de Andrade, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, João Guimarães Rosa, J. J. Veiga, Murilo Rubião, Clarice Lispector, Otto Lara Resende, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Rubem Fonseca, and Cecília Prada.
Prerequisite: Portuguese 3 or Spanish 24, 24S or 33.
