Portuguese 159. Masters and Servants: Power, Inequality and Resistance in Brazilian Literature, Film, and Hip-Hop (4 units)

Course Description: This upper-division course will examine how Brazilian writers, documentary filmmakers, and hip-hop artists have grappled with some of the most intractable and complex problems in Brazilian society. Particular attention will be paid to the ways these artists address interlocking hierarchies of class, race, and gender and sexuality; income inequality and unequal access to land and resources; developmental challenges; and popular protests and other forms of resistance. Chronologically, the course will focus on the late 19th century to the present.

Writers and artists to be studied include: Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto, Graciliano Ramos, Rubem Fonseca, Patrícia Galvão, and Luiz Ruffato. We will watch and discuss the documentary Ônibus 174 and conclude with a discussion on the contemporary rapper Emicida.

Prerequisite: Portuguese 003 or Spanish 024/024S or Spanish 033.

Course Description: Narrative and poetic texts of the 19th and 20th centuries in Brazil. In-depth and comparative study of Romantic and (Neo)Naturalist movements as a forum for discussion about literary tradition and modernity in Latin America.
