Navigating the Preparatory Lower Division Courses


 

SPA 1-3: Elementary Spanish 

 

Who should take this series?

Students who have little to no Spanish speaking, writing, and reading background and are interested in beginning to learn the language. 

 

What will I learn in this series? 

Students learn Spanish grammar and development of all language skills in a cultural context. This series emphasizes communication. 

 

What if I took Spanish in High School? 

If you have completed the second or third year of the Spanish language in the tenth or higher grade in high school you are eligible to receive credit for SPA 001 and that means you will satisfy the foreign language requirement by taking SPA 002 and SPA 003.

SPA 21-24 Intermediate Spanish

 

Who should take this series?

Students who have a limited to proficient background speaking, writing, and reading Spanish who are looking to continue improving all language skills. 

 

What will I learn in this series?

This series is more focused on modern texts and writing composition while still continuing to strengthen grammar sequence. 

 

How do I know if I should start in SPA 21, 22, 23, or 24? 

Placement Exam

The Language Center offers a non proctored Placement exam for students who want to learn more about which course is more suitable for their Spanish language skills. Students aren’t obligated to register for the course they place into.

 

SPA 31-33 Intermediate Spanish for Native Speaker Series (Heritage Spanish) 

 

Who is this series designed for?

Designed for students who grew up with Spanish at home (colloquially) and are comfortable speaking it, but may not have the experience in an academic setting. This course aims to improve oral expression and writing skills across different essay topics and genres. Greatly aims to prepare students for upper-division coursework and apply skills to professional environments. The course also offers an hour of tutoring where students get to improve their essay writing skills alongside an individual tutor.

Compare SPA 21-24 & SPA 31-33

 

What is the difference between these series? 

The main difference between these series is that the 31 series is recommended for students who are Native Spanish Speakers. Usually, AP, IB and placement exam scores will place students in a course within the 21 series. Nonetheless, if the student chooses to take the Intermediate Spanish for Native Speaker Series (Heritage Spanish) this would be the course equivalents:
