About Lina Meruane

Chilean writer and scholar living between Santiago, New York, and Madrid, Meruane is the author of award-winning fiction and nonfiction translated into multiple languages. Her novels available in English include Seeing Red and Nervous System.

She is the recipient of the Premio Iberoamericano de Letras José Donoso (2023), the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize (2012), and the Anna Seghers Prize (2011), among other international honors. She has also received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Meruane holds a doctorate in Latin American Literature from New York University and currently serves as Distinguished Writer in Residence in NYU’s MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish.

This event forms part of our translation workshop, as students prepare an English translation of Señales de nosotros, Meruane’s powerful reflection on growing up during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. Join us for a conversation on memory, dictatorship, autobiography, and the art of literary translation.
