Course Title: SPA 175: Contemporary Latin American Feminist Activisms and Art
Course Description: In this course, we will explore contemporary Latin American feminist activist movements resisting heteropatriarchal violences with attention to artistic production. Centering the disruptive discourses and use of viral hashtag trends fostered by contemporary feminist activisms in regions from the Southern Cone to the United States, we will consider how geopolitical location, identity, and positionality affect the construction and perpetuation of counter-publics and how activists continue the feminist assembly through art. By reappropriating the diverse tools of neoliberal heteropatriarchy, restructuring "public" spheres like the streets, the screen, and the page, these movements relocate the crisis of gender and sexual-based violences from the "private" and invisible sphere to the "public" where it can no longer be ignored.
