Spanish Major Requirements (Revised 5/11/20)

Lower Division - Preparatory Subject Matter (0-37 units)

Spanish Language through SPA 24 or SPA 33:
Spanish 1, 1S, 1V, or 1Y; 2, 2S, 2V or 2Y; 3, 3S, 3V, or 3Y; 21, 21S, 21V, or 21Y; 22, 22S, 22V, or 22Y; 23 or 23S; and 24 or 24S OR
Spanish 31, 32, 33

Linguistics 1 (4 units) RECOMMENDED not required.
Note: In consultation with a departmental adviser and with the consent of the department chairperson, Linguistics 1 may be taken concurrently with upper division courses.

Upper Division - Depth Subject Matter (45-48 units)

One course in each of the following five areas (19-20 units):

  • Area 1 (4 units):  SPA 100*, 100S, 141, 141S, 168, 170, or 170S
  • Area 2 (3-4 units): SPA 111N, 115, 115S, or 116
  • Area 3 (4 units): SPA 130, 131N, 134A, or 142
  • Area 4 (4 units): SPA 150N, 151, 157, 159 or 159S
  • Area 5 (4 units): SPA 117, 174, 176, SPA 169 or 177

* Students planning to take Spanish 110 should do so at the beginning of the upper division sequence or concurrently with Spanish 100.

Electives: 6-7 Courses (22-28 units)
Seven courses are required if you declared your major before Fall 2016 (26-28 units). Six elective courses are required if you declared your major During/After Fall 2016 (22-24 units).

Students may take all electives within the Spanish program or students may, with the approval of their adviser, take up to TWO elective courses outside in such programs as:

  • African American Studies (AAS 107A, 180)
  • Art History (AHI 151)
  • Anthropology (ANT 144)
  • Chicana/o Studies (CHI 154, 155, 156, 160, 170, 171)
  • Comparative Literature (COM 152, 165/S)
  • Education (EDU 151, 152)
  • History (HIS 159, 160, 164, 165, 166A, 166B, 167, 168, 169A, 169B)
  • Linguistics ( LIN 166)
  • Native American Studies (NAS 120, 133A/B, 184)

STUDY ABROAD: No more than seven electives may be taken with EAP, preferably concentrated in two of the following areas. Other combinations are possible with the approval of the major adviser:

  • Spanish literature
  • Latin American literature
  • Chicano/Latino literature
  • Spanish linguistics

INDEPENDENT STUDIES: A maximum of six units of course 199 may be counted toward the major. Course 199 cannot be used to replace regular departmental courses.
