PhD Candidate Emily Nelsen presented at LASA Cono Sur

Emily attended LASA Cono Sur which was held at Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile, from July 13-15, 2026. She presented a paper based on one of her dissertation chapters entitled "Governing Memory after Pinochet: Human Rights in Chilean Presidential Discourse." She appreciated the opportunity to present her research to an international audience in Chile and engage with various scholars who also specialize in the Southern Cone and memory studies. The experience was especially meaningful because she was able to attend and share it with her advisor, Professor Michael Lazzara, whose expertise and guidance have been instrumental in the development of her dissertation. Emily is grateful for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese's generous financial support to make this invaluable professional opportunity possible.
