In the 1960s, the last and most prolific decade of his life, the Peruvian author José María Arguedas, whose anthropological and literary work had mostly centered on the rural highlands of Peru, turned his attention to the phenomenon of mass migration to coastal cities and the emergence of a new popular urban culture. The talk will focus on a long poem written in Quechua and Spanish—"A nuestro padre creador Tupac Amaru", and two novels—El Sexto and El zorro de arriba y el zorro de abajo.
Peter Elmore is professor of Latin American Literature and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is the author of four scholarly books—Los muros invisibles, La fábrica de la memoria, El perfil de la palabra: La obra de Julio Ramón Ribeyro. The latest of his four novels is El náufrago de la Santa. He has co-authored three plays with Yuyachkani, Peru´s premier theatre group.
