Brazilian poet, diplomat, and historian, Milton Torres is the author of No fim das terras (2004), O Maranhão e o Piauí no Espaço Colonial (2006), Andaimes (2007), A Epopeia Amazônica de Frei Pedro de Santo Eliseu: Viagem (1746) (2015), and two more books forthcoming: Manuscritos do Grão-Norte: Subsídios para a História do Maranhão e Grão-Pará and Roteiro do Ourico.
Dr. Torres's talk will cover topics related mainly to his archival research in Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino de Lisboa, Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, and Biblioteca da Ajuda. As a result, he has recently completed a 500-page book, which includes unpublished manuscripts, such as a 17th C. letter of discovery, an anonymous survey of natural history species in Belém do Pará and its surroundings, Spanish and Portuguese documents regulating the missionary work in Maranhão and Pará, and other historical texts that shed new light on the colonization policies applied to the Amazonian territory by Spain and Portugal during the 1600-1700s.
