Talk title: Task-Based Language Teaching: Theory and Practice

Talk description: In recent decades, one of applied linguistics' foci has been form-focused instruction, which holds that when students learning an L2 attend to overall linguistic form, they tend to learn difficult-to-acquire aspects of grammar such as clitics better than when linguistic forms are primarily instructed. The scope in which this is observable is limited but significant, and questions remain as to how much explicit versus implicit instruction targeting forms should be carried out. Recently, this pedagogical method has been thematically subsumed by the notion of task-based language instruction, the conversation on which has itself branched into task-based and task-supported instruction. Researchers are currently investigating whether the two are mutually exclusive or compatible and in either case to what degree. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data collected from language learners in large western US universities as well as current published theory, this talk will endeavor to offer insight into how we might provide optimal input to L2 learners through the judicious application of TBLT.

Bio: Studying language has engaged Abram for decades. He first studied linguistic anthropology at CSU East bay where he earned an MA in that subject. Next, he turned his focus to French linguistics and completed an MA at UC Davis. Finally (hopefully!) he studied educational linguistics, again at UC Davis, culminating in an MA from the School of Education. Abram has been teaching French, English and Spanish for over twelve years and researching pedagogy for just as long.

About the Cluster on Language Research
The UC Davis Cluster on Language Research (https://www.languagecluster.com/about-us) has been sharing language-related research and connecting language scholars across many disciplines since 2013. The CLR is an interdisciplinary organization, drawing diverse membership and guest presenters from across many UC Davis departments, such as Education, Psychology, Computer Science, Native American Studies, Mathematics, and various language departments, like French, German, and Japanese, among others. The CLR supports research, exploration, and collaboration in the domain of "language", which commands a wide breadth in research interests and expertise across many disciplines.

We are excited to continue with this tradition of expanding our language research and connections across departments, and ask that if you know anyone in other departments or disciplines who would be interested in attending the talks or perhaps presenting, please do share the Cluster information with them.
