Drawing from research in language contact, bilingualism, sociolinguistics and education, this course aims at familiarizing students with the features of Spanish spoken in the U.S. context, promoting an understanding of the diverse population of heritage speakers and their language practices. Topics include translanguaging and code-switching, the notion of Spanglish, Spanish in contact with English, language attitudes, literacy development, and pedagogical implications. Readings: research articles will be provided on Canvas.

SPA 260-Modern Spanish Literature-CONTRA EL OLVIDO: CULTURA Y MEMORIA-Prof. Cristina Martínez-Carazo

La cuestión de la memoria histórica en España opera como un calidoscopio que cambia de forma y color en función del gobierno que ostenta el poder. La coalición actual entre PSOE y Podemos se propone reactivar una ley que durante el gobierno del Partido Popular quedó silenciada por razones ideológicas y por falta de financiación. Entre las medidas propuestas por el gobierno actual destaca la petición del Congreso de incluir en el curriculum de la educación secundaria el tema de la memoria histórica a partir del curso académico 2022-23. Desde la oposición, Vox, partido de extrema derecha, pide que se derogue el decreto autonómico sobre memoria histórica en Castilla y León y como contrapunto el PSOE y Podemos intentan abrir ahora una vía para juzgar los crímenes del franquismo por medio de una enmienda a la ley de Memoria histórica (Nov. 2021), desafiando con ello el pacto del perdón y del olvido gestado durante la transición.

Con este marco político como telón de fondo, la producción cultural de España no deja de reflexionar sobre el tema de la memoria y sobre el alcance global del mismo. La voluntad de revisar el pasado, las propuestas políticas, el oportunismo, los intereses de mercado, el poder mediático y un largo etcétera de factores dispares crean un caldo de cultivo idóneo para traer al presente dicha revisión.

Tomando como eje de reflexión de nuestro seminario la memoria histórica, la Guerra Civil y el Franquismo abordaremos el estudio de una serie de productos culturales que plasman la compleja relación que mantiene España con su pasado. Exploraremos una serie de documentales (Las fosas del olvido, Las fosas del silencio, El silencio de otros), novelas (El impostor, El lápiz del carpintero, Soldados de Salamina, Los girasoles ciegos, Ayer no más) y películas (Madres paralelas, Mientras dure la guerra, El corazón del bosque, El laberinto del fauno, además de las adaptaciones cinematográficas del Soldados de Salamina y Los girasoles ciegos), artículos de prensa, e imágenes fotográficas que nos ayudarán a calibrar la dialéctica entre cultura, memoria e historia. Nuestro hilo conductor será la problemática relación entre realidad/ficción, memoria/historia y en concreto el modo en que los textos elegidos problematizan la representación de la realidad y dialogan con las premisas ideológicas, éticas y estéticas que condicionan nuestro acercamiento al pasado.

Portuguese Courses

POR 001 Elementary Portuguese

Course description: POR 001 is taught in person. Class time is used to build social interactions through the Portuguese language. Outside of the class, students are required to complete homework assignments, readings, and complete parts of the projects. POR 001 is the first course of the Elementary Portuguese series, an introduction to the Portuguese language focusing on the development of all language skills in a cultural context with particular emphasis on communication. Unit topics will be presented contemplating contemporary issues of Lusophone communities with underlying topics such as official orthography and language varieties. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to communicate in oral and written Portuguese at the beginner level.

Important: This course has an organic format; thus, the syllabus can be modified according to the students’ needs.

POR 021 Intermediate Portuguese

Course description: POR 021 is an in-person course. Class time is used to build social interactions through the Portuguese language. Outside of the class, students are required to complete homework assignments, readings, and complete parts of the projects. POR 021 is a continuation of POR 003 or POR 31(G), the first year of Portuguese language studies. The course consists of the development and improvement of all language skills in Portuguese with an emphasis on interaction and problem-solving in the Lusophone world. Students will be led to the use of language by reading literary and authentic genres based on contemporary discussions to reach an intermediate-mid proficiency in the target language. Unit topics will be presented contemplating contemporary issues of Lusophone communities with underlying topics such as official orthography and language varieties. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to communicate in oral and written Portuguese at the intermediate-mid level and enroll in POR 22.

Prerequisites: POR 003, POR 31(G), or instructor's consent.
