Through interviews, conversations, and creative storytelling, Dialogic bridges disciplines to bring listeners the latest in humanities research and public scholarship at UC Davis and the surrounding community.
A departmental working group for the project "Preparing Bilingual Spanish Speaking Students for Careers in Immigration Law" has been awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the League of United Latin American Citizens "for championing the needs of bilingual students and promoting bilingualism in the legal profession." The award was presented on October 10, 2022, at a meeting of the working group with five UC Davis alumni who returned to campus to offer feedback on the project.
With support from the National Endowment from the Humanities, the Global Migration Center, and the Spanish and Portuguese department, Professors Robert Irwin and Emily Vázquez hosted the event "Careers in Law, Advocacy, and Social Services for Immigrant Communities." At this event, a panel of distinguished alumni from the Spanish and Portuguese department talked about their experiences following career paths that focus on helping Latinx communities, and about how their Spanish major has helped them accomplish their professional goals.
On Wednesday, October 5, 2022 from 9-10:30 am (Pacific), Professor Robert Patrick Newcomb will interview the writer Humbert Hernández. They will discuss Hernández's new book, Mis patios perdidos: memorias de una infancia gibraltareña. The event is open to the public, will be bilingual (English/Spanish), and will take place over Zoom.

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, Professor Robert Patrick Newcomb will interview author MG Sanchez, about his new novel Marlboro Man. The event is open to the public, and will take place over Zoom.
Sanchez is Gibraltar's most prominent English-language writer, and is the author of several novels, as well as short story collections, memoirs, and anthologies.
On May 23rd, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese hosted an interview with Bernardino Gabriel Hernández.
Hernández graduated from UC Davis with a BA in Spanish in 2009. Being undocumented, he had difficulty entering the US workforce. He therefore returned to his native country of Mexico where he eventually managed to set up his own business. He is now a successful businessman, one of “the other DREAMers”.
On Friday, May 20, the UC Comparative Iberian Studies Working Group will host its 9th meeting at UC Davis. The group, founded in 2011 and initially funded by a grant from the UC Humanities Research Institute, is directed by Professor Robert Patrick Newcomb. It features faculty specialists in Iberian (Spanish/Castilian, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, and Basque) literatures and cultures from several UC campuses. This event, which is open to the public, is supported by UC Davis' and UC Santa Barbara's departments of Spanish and Portuguese.
