Enrique García Santo Tomás is the Frank P. Casa Collegiate Professor of Spanish at the University of Michigan.  He has published four books and seven critical editions, in addition to numerous edited volumes and journal issues dealing with the literary, cultural, and material history of early modern Spain.  His current book projects explore the fruitful, yet under-explored dialogue between scientific discoveries and the development of fiction in Cervantes and his contemporaries. His first monograph dedicated to science and literature, titled La musa refractada (2014), focused on optics and astronomy, and specifically on the Spanish fortunes of Galileo’s telescope. The talk he will deliver at UC Davis draws on research for his next book, La musa encinta, which examines early modern obstetrics in conversation with the fiction of the time.
